Yes, I suppose that ought to earn me a bit of sympathy, wouldn't it? The poor girl is unlikely to be escorted by anyone else -- too many people eager to distance themselves from her sister's antics, and who can blame them? And she's too shy to go herself, for fear of making a scene.
Why not? If I behave myself, I've nothing to lose, only ground to gain. And I will rein myself in this time. I've already made too many mistakes.
Very well, then. I've decided. People will talk, as they always do, but at least it's likely to be favorable this time.
